Celebrating the Living Culture takes place at the historic Saint Fethlimith’s Cathedral, Kilmore, Cavan on Saturday 18th May 2013 @ 7pm. This event is a celebration of musical talent showcasing music from our shared traditions. This Concert is part of Culture Cavan project an initiative funded by International Fund for Ireland in conjunction with Cavan County Council. This evening will include the debut performance of the new County Choir under the direction of Blánaid Murphy.

The Choir are excited at the prospect of their first public performance in the historic and tranquil surrounds of Kilmore.

Martin Donohoe, will be MC on the evening.

He has worked tirelessly with many musicians, singers and dancers to bring together an eclectic mix of musical talent from our varied traditions.

Guest performers include Mullaghboy Accordion & Drum Band, Cavan Town Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Wendy Swan historian on Kilmore, Bert Coote poetry recital, Lorraine Spotton singer, Cavan Set & Sean nos dancers, Lorraine Vance singer, Martin Murphy All Ireland Champion Ceile Band Drummer, Merilyn Morton keyboards, Seamus Fay Cavan Lilter, Eamonn Maguire Storyteller, Fintan McManus on whistle & bouzouki.

This event is sponsored by the International Fund for Ireland and Cavan County Council.

Workshops and Events for the month of May 2013

Another busy month for our branch musicians ending with the county Fleadh in Killeshandra on the June bank holiday weekend.

May 7 Irish dancing at the Back yard with Claire McDermott (Lord of the Dance) will work with branch dancers on new Seisiún routines. Only those attending dance classes regularly should attend. Please bring heavy and light shoes. No cost to the parents, as part of the branch development programme.

May 12 Sunday from 3-5pm at Farnham Arms Hotel, main street Cavan (please note venue) for the those involved in the workshop programme. At 5pm we will be taking a photograph of those involved in the workshop programme.

May 11 Saturday for those musicians attending secondary school, the Castlemanor Sessions with James McGovern and Lisa Geoghegan from 6pm .

May 18 Saturday from 7-9pm: “Celebrating the living culture, St Fethlimidh’s Catherdral, Kilmore, Co Cavan”. For those musicians who need to sit, please bring stools.

May 19 Sunday from 3-5pm at the Back Yard, our normal venue for those involced in the workshop programme.

Secondary School Musicians

The session for secondary school students will continue on Saturday May 11 from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

This session will be at Castlemanor Nursing Home, in Cavan, this time in the main building

Our previous nights was a great success and we welcome all secondary school students. The session will be led by James McGovern and Lisa Geoghegan.

Leitrim County Fleadh

A jam-packed weekend of traditional music, song and dance will take over the town ofBallinamorethis weekend from Friday 26th until Sunday 28th April.

The finest pick of Leitrim singers, dancers and musicians will take to the stage on Saturday and Sunday to fight it out for Fleadh Cheoil titles and trophies. A business not to be taken lightly!

This teamed with pub entertainment (in 10 venues) will make it a weekend not to be missed.

Forty ofIreland’s most sought-after musicians will grace the town with their music from dusk to dawn.

If the sound of flutes, bodhrans and uilleann pipes make you want to get up and dance a jig, mark this date in your diary and take a dander upMain Streetonto the session trail.

It all kicks off this Friday evening, April 26 with a variety of Irish music styles on the pub session trail. Musicians from all aroundIrelandare gathering in Ballinamore for what is guaranteed to be a night not to be missed.

Saturday, April 27th, the dancing competitions commence in Ballinamore Community Centre at 12 noon.

From 3.30pm Sean Gilrane gives a talk on John McKenna’s flute music in Ballinamore Library.

Experience the unbelievable youth talent in Leitrim, as the Youth Gathering involving a pop / trad music quiz followed by a session at 6-8pm.

If ceili dancing is your thing, swing by the Commercial Hotel for fun dancing to the Moylurg Band, who won third place at the Senior All Ireland Fleadh in 2012. Entry €10.

You will not know what pub to choose in town Saturday night, as they will all provide Leitrim traditional music at its best.

Music competitions will be held in Fatima PPS and Ballinamore Community Centre from 12 noon on Sunday, April 28.

The whole weekend will be wrapped up with music, dancing and singing throughout the town on Sunday evening.

All roads lead to Ballinamore this weekend for song, music, dance and best of all the craic!

A unique 4-day event, in co-operation with Musicians without Borders, consisting of workshops, concerts, talks and discussions exploring the role music can play in conflict resolution, peace building and building positive and inclusive community and individual identities. During the first festival of its kind ever to be held in Ireland, internationally renowned experts in the fields of music therapy, community music and amateur music will join with local community leaders, young people and musicians to develop long-term projects where music functions as a bridge-builder between communities, cultures, ethnicities, religions and classes. The goals of the festival include creating a legacy of exchange, skill sharing and mutual inspiration. Musicians without Borders are renowned for their work in the delivery of music based projects in areas of conflict such including Bosnia and Herzegovina,Macedonia, Kosovo, South East Asia and theMiddle East. Their experienced and world renowned facilitators will be presenting a range of diverse workshops throughout the festival.

This festival is open to non musician and musicians of all levels, as well as anyone working in the area of conflict resolution and peace building. There are a range of workshops that would also appeal to community groups , schools and youth organisations.

There will be workshops in:

Creative Leadership
Community development through music participation
Conflict resolution
“Singing to our babies” (early years workers)
Community music teaching in fragile environments
Vocal training
Drumming/ percussion for teenagers
Improvisation as a model for social change
Training leaders in music-based work
Introduction to Music therapy
Haiku-writing workshop with Gabriel Rosenstock
Talks – Guest speakers will deliver talks on topics as diverse as music therapy, the relationship therapeutic music work and will look at the impact of music-based projects in conflict areas past and present
Concerts – Every evening during the festival.

NYAH Weekend

The NYAH once again provided great entertainment with national and international artists playing in the Farnham Arms Hotel. The event was well supported with the bar at capacity and the carvery area also show casing talent. The visiting artists also gave workshops to branch members on the Friday night which were inspiring for our young artists. Saturday morning again provided the opportunity for more workshops in the Back Yard, Moynehall. Artists such as Darren Maloney, Gary Lynch, Marco Fabbri, Gabriel Caporuscio, Dean Warner, Graham Wells, Noel Sweeney, Johnny King, Sean O’Flaherty and Fergal Breen, who worked with branch members on developing their playing. We would like to thank the tutors for sharing their expertise and passion for the music with our young people. Huge thanks also to NYAH co-ordinator and branch Chairman Martin Donohoe for arranging the workshops, committee, working group parents, participants and their parents for their attendance and co-operation. Sorry about the change of the April Sunday workshops in the Back yard to Friday. This was to facilitate attendance at the Belturbet Seisiún mor on the 7^th April and Corcaghan Féis on April 28^th. The second Back yard workshops for April will be on Friday April 26.

Branch members play for Minister of State for Tourism Michael Ring

Cavan Town Branch members met with and played for Minister of State Michael Ring on Wednesday 3^rd April. The minister was on a visit to Cavan to officially launch the county’s walking festival.

The event, which runs for nine days from Friday May 3rd to the 12th, offers visitors to the region the choice of 25 local routes – targeting the most advanced walkers to beginners.
